Saturday March 3, 2018 to Saturday March 31, 2018 - Women's Comics Month Returns to Challengers! Challengers is once again celebrating Women and Non-binary creators for the month of March, but this year we’re doing it a little differently. We plan to have 3 creators in every Saturday and Sunday of the month.
March 26th, 2018 - Through March 25th, we're offering the award-winning first volume of MARCH at 20% off! Then, on March 26th at 7pm, come back to hang out and chat with other fans about it! Snacks and cheap beer will be served.
Thursday, March 29th, 2018 - Challengers is excited to host noted comic book author and novelist MICHAEL MORECI for a WRITING WORKSHOP. Michael is a full-time author and has written comics for years (most recently Superman and The Flash), and his debut novel “Black Star Renegades” is garnering rave reviews across all levels of fandom.
Michael is teaching this one-night-only writing workshop, focusing on idea development, how to pitch your ideas, and writing for comics and prose. The cost of this workshop is $31 but that also gets you a hardcover copy of BLACK STAR RENEGADES. The workshop is limited to 20 participants, so reserve your spot now by pre-ordering the book.
The workshop takes place on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at 7:00pm.
Saturday, March 31st, 2018 - Can you believe it? Challengers is (going to be) TEN YEARS OLD! We opened our doors on March 31, 2008 and here it is a decade later! So, OF COURSE we're having a PARTY! • Signature Patrick and Dal cocktails • 10% Off all purchases all day • Challengers-themed raffle prizes • Other things! • YOU Saturday, March 31st, 2018 from 6pm to 10pm. Thanks for ten years, and counting! Keep reading comics!
April has a lot going on in it, it's the first full month of “spring” (or whatever you call that season that sort of happens between Chicago Winter and Chicago Summer). April also houses Earth Day, Honesty Day, April Fool’s Day, Arbor Day, Find a Rainbow Day, and also National Volunteer Month! Whoa! That’s a lot happening! So with that all in mind we came up with this theme and activities.
In honor of National Volunteer Month, we are doing a book drive for Chicago Books to Women in Prison. They are a non-profit that, “distributes paperback books free of charge to incarcerated women, including transwomen, nationwide. We are dedicated to offering the opportunity for self-empowerment, education and entertainment that reading provides.
Currently we send books to women (including transwomen) in state prisons in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio, as well as all Federal prisons. We do not send books to jails and other short-term facilities outside Chicago.”
They do get requests regularly for graphics novels just as much as other types of novels. However, there are restrictions for what they can accept.
There are a few things to keep in mind given prison restrictions: Paperback only (probably not a concern) Paper only—no stickers, glitter, metal pieces or other materials No nudity or graphic sexual images No extreme violence (Also had books returned that have a photo or illustration of a gun on the cover and try to catch that now!)
For every book you donate, you will receive a raffle ticket! At the end of the night we will raffle off a big prize.
We’ll provide coloring pages and crayons so we can connect with our inner most creative selves while listening to some chill toons. Per usual we will also be providing snacks and beverages and it is BYOB!
What is Women’s Comics Night? The Mission: Once a month casual hangout after hours at Challengers Comics + Conversation meant to build community and foster friendship! Intended for all women and is unequivocally Queer, Non-Binary, & Trans friendly!
